Back to the Cuisinart kitchen scale. It is unfortunate that the scale is quantized to the nearest 5 grams. By the way, we don't know how the round-off works. Does it round-off is the standard way, jumping to the next 5 grams at the halfway point, or does it do something else? I don't know. But I do recall that I might be able to use a lever to magnify the weight of my object. Below is a picture of a 10x lever.
The lever is a beam of wood approximately 24" long. There is a hole drilled in the the left end of the beam, through which a nail is inserted to make a fulcrum. I made a mark 2" from the fulcrum, and another at 20" from the fulcrum. At the 2" mark is a small block of wood with a pointy, roof-like top. The scale is centered under this block. Dimes to be weighed are placed over the 20" mark near the right end of the beam. The beam puts about 800 grams of weight on the scale, but this is removed by using the tare correction. The lever should magnify the weight by a factor of 10x. So after tare, we take the scale display reading and divide by 10. This should also reduce the quantization error by a factor of 10. Below is an image with a set of 5 dimes placed at the 20" mark.
Here are some experimental results:
#of Dimes Display (grams) Ave (grams) weight per dime/10 (grams)
1 25,25,20 23.33 2.33
2 45,45,45 45.00 2.25
3 70,65,65 66.67 2.22
4 90, 90,90 90.00 2.25
5 115,120,110 115.00 2.30
10 230,230,220 226.67 2.27
15 345,345,335 341.67 2.28
20 460,440,445 448.33 2.24
25 575,575,580 576.67 2.31
Each trial weighing was repeated 3 times, with all 3 values shown in the table. the average of the 3 trials is computed in the 3rd column. This value is divided by 10 and then by the number of dimes to compute a weight per dime. We have weight per dime that varies from 2.22 to 2.33 grams, with an average value of 2.27 grams. This is pretty close to the the US Mint value of 2.268 grams!
